This sculpture is hand-built in porcelain. The detailed mosaic-like surface design is achieved by the application of thin printed porcelain tiles. The patterns are inspired by medieval floor tiles, Victorian wallpapers and 18th Century needlepoint. Susan creates animation of the form partly through her modelling and partly through chance in the heat of the kiln. Her creatures speak to our connection with nature and the stories they hold.

About this maker
Susan was born and grew up in Cork, Ireland. In 1991 she received a Certificate with Merit from the Grennan Mill Craft School in Co. Kilkenny. From there she moved to Scotland and the Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1999 with a First Class Honours Degree in Design and Applied Arts and a Post Graduate Diploma in Ceramics in 2000. Susan exhibits widely in solo and group exhibitions in the UK, Ireland and abroad.
