With a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art, an MA in Communication Design, and following a career in design and academia, Amanda-Sue first came to ceramics by enrolling on a course at Morley College, London in 2012. With further short courses and by joining a communal ceramics studio Amanda-Sue continued to develop her practice, making the step change to becoming a full-time ceramics-artist in 2018. In 2020, Amanda-Sue co-founded Grove Vale Ceramics, a gallery and studio in East Dulwich, London.
Inspired by the geometry and richness of the built environment, from Neolithic stone circles to Gothic cathedrals, through to industrial and domestic buildings of the 20th century, Amanda-Sue’s constructed vessels incorporate both wheel-thrown and hand-building techniques.
Recent work has focused on themes of stacking, propping, and layering to create sculptural lidded vessels and tower-like forms punctuated with areas of detailing and rhythmic textured surfaces. Colours range from earthy and elemental to spots of saturated acid and pastel hues created using a range of oxides and engobes. Glaze is applied to the inside of the vessel accentuating the transition from exterior to interior. The works can be experienced either standing alone or in groups echoing sculptural still-life and cityscapes.
