Inspired by traditional Japanese pottery, this stoneware tea bowl is wheel-thrown and decorated using natural materials and wood-fired in a chamber kiln. Martin’s tea bowls are characterised by their earthy forms. These are often encrusted with fly ash and rich glazed surfaces punctuated with stone-bursts and feldspar inclusions.

Martin describes his work as ‘ Clay – Water – Wood – Fire – Space’. These five elements are synthesised to create a reversed trompe-l’œil type of work, seemingly excavated or revealed, and simultaneously diminishing the third dimension.
